VW considers building vehicles at Ford's US factories

The German automaker is also considering building a second US assembly plant.

Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess has confirmed that the company's partnership talks with Ford involve expanded production at US factories.

Speaking following a White House meeting, the executive said VW could use Ford's US factories to build cars, according to Reuters.

"We are in quite advanced negotiations and dialog with Ford Corporation to really build up a global automotive alliance, which also would strengthen the American automotive industry," he said.

The German automaker is also considering building a second US assembly plant to complement the current Chattanooga factory, responsible for building the Passat sedan and Atlas SUV.

The information was disclosed at a White House meeting in which President Trump's administration was expected to pressure German automakers to increase US production or face tariffs on vehicles imported from EU plants. There is still significant uncertainty surrounding Trump's tariff threats, however.
