Aston Martin creates 'reversible' EV conversion for classic cars

The company suggests classic cars may eventually be illegal to operate without a zero-emissions retrofit.

Aston Martin has revealed the first reversible EV powertrain conversion for classic cars.

The company warns that future emissions regulations could restrict usage of classic cars. A reversible conversion can ensure owners can still drive models from decades past, without permanent alterations that would affect their value.

The first car to receive the EV 'cassette' retrofit is a 1970 DB6 MkII Volante. The electric drive system has been attached to the mount points for the original engine, which has been safely removed.

"We are very aware of the environmental and social pressures that threaten to restrict the use of classic cars in the years to come," Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer says. "I believe this not only makes Aston Martin unique, but a truly forward-thinking leader in this field."

Aston Martin Works expects to begin completing customer Heritage EV conversions next year.
